William Blake | Natalie’s Song Prophecy
The song Prophecy is track number two from Natalie’s Shoot Shoot EP. Natalie was inspired to write the song after studying the work of William Blake.
Natalie says “Prophecy is written about the way Blake questioned organised religion while pushing forward the idea of a more pure and individual experience with divinity. He did write about ‘prophecy’ and prophetic visions, mostly from the perspective of looking at the world through the eyes of children, creating the idea that they connect with divinity because of their own purity and innocence, while anyone else who claims to do so is corrupt and false.
In the song I wanted to create a direct reference to Blake, so I looked at one of my favourite poems of his - ‘A Little Girl Lost’, from his collection ‘Songs of Innocence and Experience’. In the poem the focal character, a young girl named Lyca, embarks on a journey through her own innocence and experience. I used two lines of this poem in the song, ‘pale through pathless ways’, ‘the fancied image strays’ - two lines which I love, and which I felt really fitted the song”.
Prophecy has been described as:
“A journey through hypnotic rounds of percussion, dying delay and acerbic strings. An ode to William Blake, Natalie McCool channels his haunting voice throughout; ‘..I’ll take your sins away, I’m a man of prophecy’ her dynamic vocals soaring to crescendo only to plunge to a whisper seconds later. Inspired by Blake’s poem ‘The Little Girl Lost’, ‘Prophecy’ draws feelings of self discovery, innocence and experience into a sinister yet alluring vision, inventing a shimmering landscape of light where nothing is as it seems.”
